Zurich, Switzerland Winter, 1972

Hugh McDonald left for Zurich the next day and checked in at the Eden au Lac. He had not long to wait. Shortly before seven that evening, he had a telephone call from the same lady he had met on his previous visit. She was phoning from the lobby of the hotel, and suggested they meet in the bar. McDonald went to the bathroom, ran his electric razor over his evening shadow and hurried to the elevator.

Over Scotch and soda in the dimly lit cocktail bar she said, “I thought a great deal about the request you made last time we met. I confess I was very angry with you. I really meant it when I told you to finish the assignment you came for. I told you to leave us out of your personal vendettas. You didn’t follow my advice, and I became angrier. With every contact you made, you inquired about Saul ...

“But then, I said to myself, why not. We do not turn our friends down. You would do the same for us. We just want things done in their proper place and time.”

McDonald remembers that as he listened to her voice, he felt a deep satisfaction that the name Saul was now well and truly pinned on the man he sought.

“I couldn’t take your advice. I had to proceed. I am pleased that my breaking of the rules did not deter you from being helpful.”

She said, “It has been difficult to pinpoint the man. Several of our people believe they know him. But without a name, it is not easy.” She gave a quizzical laugh. “We call him Saul. Everybody calls him Saul except Saul, who doesn’t know he is called Saul. The picture you left is not a good one. We do know, however, that he is a professional killer, which narrows the field. There are several such men, and we cannot be sure which is your man. There was a period of time when Russia trained teams of assassins in the Ukraine. One or two broke away and became free lance. If you saw him, would you recognize him?”

Although he had seen the man in the flesh for no more than thirty seconds, almost ten years before, McDonald had put that face together with the Identi-Kit a hundred times. My God! Would he know him!

All he could do was nod.

“That is good. We think then that it will be necessary for you to look at several men, and get to Saul by elimination. That is why we called you all the way across the Atlantic to Zurich. A man has arrived in this city who may be Saul. He is a killer. He is meeting two Arabs. It will be possible for you to observe him. He looks like the man in the picture.”

McDonald could not believe that it could be so easy. His voice reflected his tension. “Can you arrange a meeting?”

In an almost teasing way she prodded his nose with her index finger.
